It’s been a while since I’ve actually run a race…Oct 19th to be exact, which was my first half marathon. I didn’t purposely stop running races – life and the holidays got in the way. Luckily my running buddies had been thinking ahead back in Sept and we signed up for the Super Bowl 4 miler which was this morning.
The weather was near perfect in the lower 40’s with the sun playing peek-a-boo behind the clouds. We met up at 7:30am to car pool and got to the race site shortly after 8am. We collected our bibs and goodie bags with plenty of time to spare so we took them back to the car. After a short wait in the pottie line we found the starting area for the race and jumped around to keep warm.
Because it’s a football themed race, everyone was encouraged to wear their favorite team’s jersey…and there were plenty to be seen. I was sporting my Tom Brady/New England Patriots jersey (yeah, yeah, I heard plenty of comments/jokes about deflated footballs).
They announced the start of the race promptly at 9am and as usual it took a minute to actually get across the start line – it was there that I started both my Garmin and the C25K running app (I still can’t figure out why their distances are so different). I programmed the app to run 3:1 run/walk intervals – it felt a little weird to walk so early in the race but I knew it would help me finish strong. Miles 1 and 2 passed relatively quickly and right after the 3 mile mark I took an extra walk break to eat a few Shot Blocks. The last mile seemed the shortest…weird! When the finish line was in sight I pushed as hard as I could to ‘hurry up’ (my Garmin says I was running a 9min pace when I crossed the line…WOW).
I’m really happy with my finishing time and I’m looking forward to committing to another race. K wants me to do a 10 mile race later in Feb…hmmm, I’m thinking about it 😉
