Too many projects?

I’ve been jumping between projects this week, that means I haven’t finished any of them!! I’m officially halfway done with my Elephant Abstractions. All the pieces are completed in the first three quadrants and are now attached in three big sections. I’ve cut out the paper pieces for the next quadrant and I’m setting a goal to do at least 5 pieces a day.

The other project that got my attention is Scrap Frabric Love’s scrappy sew along. I already had a bunch of 2.5 x 4.5 rectangles cut so I laid out the plus/cross block in contrasting colors and started assembling them. I’ve got 14 done… six to go!

As for Sewcialites2 QAL, I printed Block 12 on Thursday and cut out the pieces for it yesterday. It’s a pretty straight forward block so I should get that completed today.

I also took a slight detour when I saw Carole’s post about the Safelight Project 2023. I’ve made these cases before and thought I could bang out a few more to help the cause. I’ve got several cut out and plan to get them done and in the mail this week. This is a simple pattern that uses two coordinating fat quarters per set (cosmetic bag, sunglasses case, tissue holder), please join in if you can.

I’ve also been distracted by watching the Australian Open. Since most of the good matches are in the middle of the night in my time zone, my sleeping patterns are all off!! But I’ve also missed a few great 5 setters because I just could not stay awake! LOL Many of the top seeds have fallen on both the Men’s and Ladies sides but the young Americans are really having a great tournament. The matches are only being carried by ESPN and most of them are only on their streaming service ESPN+ for an additional charge. Luckily when I got my new Pixel 6 in late 2021 the plan I chose included ESPN+ and Disney+ at no extra charge ๐Ÿ˜

That’s about all for now… have a great rest of your weekend!!

Woven Star top

I got the Woven Star top all pieced this week… it took longer than expected because I made a few mistakes and had to rip out a few seams ๐Ÿ˜ฆ But all’s well that ends well!

I know it looks a little wonky in this picture but it’s really not that bad ๐Ÿ˜‰ LOL It measures 50×50 so it will make a nice crib size or child size quilt.

We had a bit of winter weather here this weekend… so pretty when it only lasts a few hours, haha! The picture with the wild turkeys was taken about 4 hours after the ones with the snow.

I just finished watching the Australian Open Men’s Championship match between Rafa Nadal and Daniil Medvedev… if you don’t want to know the outcome… STOP reading now!!

It was an epic 5 set match that could have gone to either player and it included some phenomenal shot making. Also on the line was a chance at breaking the three-way tie between Roger, Novak & Rafa of 20 grand slam titles… and the winner was:

RAFA NADAL!!!!! Wow, it was a crazy roller coaster ride! He lost the first two sets and it appeared he was physically done…but if anyone has watched Rafa you know he’s never out until the very last point has been played. In true Nadal fashion, he rallied to win the 3rd & 4th sets. He broke Medvedev’s serve early in the 5th but was broken back to bring the score to 5 all. Rafa broke Medvedev again to take the lead 6-5 and was able to serve it out for the WIN!!!!!!

There are two big NFL games later today and wouldn’t you know it we’re having problems with our DirecTv service. It started last night so we called and of course they can’t get anyone out until Monday morning ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Luckily I was able to use my smart TV to stream the tennis match on ESPN+ otherwise I would’ve been furious. If it doesn’t clear up for the football games, I’ve got my laptop jerry-rigged so we can watch on the app but use the TV as the monitor. Oy!! what a mess!!

That’s all for now… have a great rest of your weekend!

Woven Star

I missed posting last week because there really wasn’t much to share. I haven’t been spending much time in my sewing room but I have made a little progress on the Woven Star quilt from Debby Brown’s Color Blocks challenge from November.

I decided I didn’t want to do all the sashing strips recommended in the pattern so my quilt will be smaller

Here’s a progress shot, I still need to piece all the blocks together…then I’ll decide if I want to add borders

As for the weight loss qal, I’ve still been keeping track of the blocks but I haven’t made any progress losing weight! LOL Ugh… the struggle bus is real ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I’m getting out of the house today to go to lunch and a show with some of the ladies in my neighborhood. I usually shy away from these things because I feel so awkward in big groups but I’m pushing myself to get out of my comfort zone. We’re going to see “Menopause the Musical”… Ha, I’m sure I’ll be able to relate LOL

I’ve been staying up late and getting up early to watch the Australian Open. Luckily when I got my new Pixel 6 I had to upgrade to a new Unlimited plan that happened to come with Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu so I’m able to watch all of the matches on ESPN streaming once they stop covering it on their regular cable channels. I’ve really been enjoying the Ladies matches this year, the matches have been very competitive.

And as far as football, I’m really happy with the teams that won yesterday! I wanted the underdog Bengals to win (I really like Burrow) and I’m ecstatic that Rodgers & the Packers have been knocked out. Today I’ve got my fingers crossed for Tampa Bay and Buffalo.

Oh and I almost forgot – I formally turned in my notice to retire this year!!! My last day will be April 1st, no joke!!! It’s so exciting but also frightening…wish me luck :-p

That’s all for now, have a great rest of your weekend!

Fish Tales top

The February Color Blocks top is finished, I’m calling it Fish Tales. This is not the pattern layout provided in the QAL, it was a little too traditional for me so I played with the position of the blocks until I liked what I saw. I added 4.5″ borders and called it done at 48×56, it will make a nice child size quilt.

I auditioned a couple fabrics from my stash for the backing and chose this gray/black print. I think it compliments the front very nicely and there’s enough left over to use for binding as well!

I’ve been watching the Australian Open this past week, unfortunately my favorites did not win. If you don’t know who won the tournament yet… look away now!!!

~~~~~~Spoiler Alert~~~~~~~
I was cheering for Jennifer Brady in the Women’s final and I was hoping Nadal would make it to the final but he did not. The winner on the Women’s side, Naomi Osaka and for the Men, Novak Djokovic was unbeatable!
That’s about all for today. I have not started working on the quilts my former neighbor sent – I want to finish Fish Tales first ๐Ÿ˜‰
Have a great rest of your weekend – Stay safe & stay strong
February Color Block QAL
I didn’t spend a lot of time in my sewing room this week so I don’t have a lot of progress to show.
Last week I mentioned that I didn’t have enough of the mint green fabric that I really wanted to use for the background so… I ordered more! The pattern calls for 3 5/8 yard and I only had 3 yards so I went through my fabric receipts and figured out I bought it from Since I wanted to be sure I didn’t have any shading differences I went ahead and purchased 4 yards to use on this project…saving my original 3 yards for something else ๐Ÿ˜‰ I also purchased a solid blue and a solid peach for my stash.
That new order arrived on Thursday but I didn’t cut into it until yesterday. I spent the morning squaring my scrappy blocks, cutting the 7″ squares from the background fabric, marking the diagonal sewing lines (one for the scrappy block and another to make a bonus HST), sewing on those lines, cutting and pressing – whew!
31 blocks done (I’ll be saving the extra block in my orphan bin for some future project). The mint green is actually a little better represented in the next picture of the bonus HSTs. I have no idea what I’m going to do with these but I certainly couldn’t waste that much fabric. These were squared up at 6″.
And that’s all folks. I still need to cut the sashing for in between each scrappy block and then decide if I want to follow the pattern and apply a 8.5″ border…hmmm, I’ll wait to make that decision after the top is pieced.
Still no exercise to speak of… it’s been chilly and rainy for several weeks now… at least it’s not snow!! Ha!
I’ll be cheering for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tonight in the Super Bowl and the Australian Open starts later tonight too (Monday in Melbourne) – whoop whoop!
Have a great rest of your weekend! Stay safe and stay strong ๐Ÿ™‚
Ready for February
I finished piecing and ironing the 30 blocks necessary for the February Color Block challenge! I pulled fabrics from my gray/black scrap bin and just cut a ton of 2.5″ squares with no idea how many I needed to make 30 blocks… Ha, math prep is not my strong suit! As it turns out, I ended up cutting enough to make 31 blocks!! Wow ๐Ÿ˜ฎ now that’s dumb luck for ya!!!
Once all the blocks were done I started looking through my stash for background options… I pulled these and gave them a trial run
Once again the ‘prep’ bug bit me because I didn’t check the fabric requirements to make sure I had enough before I fell in love with one of them! Argh! The pattern calls for 3 5/8 yards – grrrrr! I only have 3 yards each of the green and orange so I have to either take them out of the running or… alter the pattern or… buy more fabric!!! I’ll let you guess what I’ve decided to do ๐Ÿ˜‰
ATP & WTA Tennis are gearing up for the Australian Open to begin in about a week. I’ve been keeping up with several players online and many had to endure a rough 14 day quarantine once they arrived in Australia. They’ve finally been released and now they have a little time to really go hard preparing. The warm up tournaments have started so I’ve been watching a few matches late at night as they’re 16 hours ahead of me!!
Other than that I haven’t been doing much… I stopped running for no particular reason. I missed a few days, then the weather turned rainy and cold which made me miss a few more and before I even noticed – it’s been almost a month!!! Ugh!!! I had gotten up to 3 miles doing run/walk intervals – now I’m going to have to start all over ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Damn, that makes me so mad at myself!! There’s just no excuse for it… apathy, laziness, delayed consequences, SMH!
That’s all for now… here’s a picture I took last week when Sammie was stalking me for another treat… she’s got one very menacing stare!! LOL
Stay safe โค
Rinse & repeat
It seems January was on constant repeat, meaning I’m in the habit building stage so every day consists of many of the same things – walking, cleaning, quilting.
I’m happy to report 2 out of 3 went very well…the cleaning one, just eh! I’ve been walking every day – even when it’s been a bit chilly. There were several days last week in the low 40’s and yesterday was a gray, chilly, drizzly mess…but I walked ๐Ÿ™‚ As for quilting, I’ve been doing something every day and in just one month I’ve pieced a new flimsy top (Plaidish) and completed two UFO’s that have been basted for more than month. As for cleaning, my plan is to spend just 15 mins a day/5 days a week cleaning a section of the house. It sounds super simple and it is, but most days end up putting it off ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
This is my Granny Cabin quilt before washing. I quilted an all-over meander motif and used a grey print for binding. It finished 58″ square.
This is my Rainbow Improv quilt before washing. Since the fabrics and design are so dominant I wanted to down play the quilting with simple diagonal lines. I corralled all that color with a medium grey binding. This one also finished 58″ square.
Next up, I’ll be finishing my Meadowland quilt…here it is all ironed & ready for quilting. I searched Pinterest & IG for quilting ideas and I think I’m going to do all-over random swirls. That should play nicely with all the angles. This one will finish 48×64.
I have no specific plans for these three quilts…I’ll probably post them for sale on FB and if there are no buyers they’ll likely go to charity ๐Ÿ™‚
I went to WW yesterday for my weigh in and I’m still .2lb away from a 10# loss…UGH!! I’ve been see-sawing back and forth with the same couple of pounds for months now. I haven’t been great at staying within my points so it’s no surprise…I’m just not sure how to get my head in the right place but I’m going to keep trying!
I finished watching the Australian Open this morning with the Men’s final match and yesterday was the Women’s final. If you don’t want to know who won…stop reading!!
In the Women’s final it was American Sofia Kenin vs Muguruza from Spain. Kenin dropped the first set and it looked iffy as she started the second but in the end she fought it out and won her first Grand Slam title! Congrats Sofia!! Today in the Men’s final it was Novak Djokovic vs Domonic Thiem. It was a tough 5 set match and momentum swung several times but in the end I guess experience won out…Djokovic broke Thiem early in the 5th and never looked back. Congrats Novak!
That’s all for now, enjoy the Superbowl later today! I’ll be cheering for the Chiefs but either way I’ll just be happy if it’s a good game ๐Ÿ™‚
I’m on a roll
I’m so happy I’ve been keeping up with my habits! I’ve been walking every day – not very far, my goal is to walk at least 15 minutes everyday. The last week or so I’ve been going about 20 minutes but the goal right now is to build the habit of walking every day and then I can increase the time or distance. I started this habit on 12/30 so as of yesterday I have a 27 day streak going – Yay!
There are all kinds of varying reports on how long it takes to actually create a habit you no longer have to think about…I’m going to go with the longer time frame of 61 days just to be sure I have it firmly in place.
I’ve also been doing my IG challenge #dosomethingquiltyeveryday. I almost broke the chain a few days ago because we had some unexpected visitors and I didn’t feel it was right to go spend an hour in my sewing room…so I stole a quick 15 minutes two days in a row to fold some fat quarters and sort through my orphan block box.
Our visitors left yesterday morning so last night I spent some time quilting all over my Granny Cabin quilt. This has been basted for a few weeks now but was laying folded on the floor so I had to iron it out pretty good before starting.
Before our visitors arrived I put the final stitches in my Plaidish quilt top. This is still hanging on my design wall – I just love looking at it!! โค
I skipped WW again this week ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Not because I thought I hadn’t lost any weight but our friends didn’t leave until after my meeting time yesterday. I was planning to go weigh-in this morning and when I checked meeting times for today the earliest is 12:00. Ugh, I want to weigh in before I’ve had anything to eat or drink so I think I’ll check for other early morning meetings this week and go weigh in then.
I’ve been enjoying watching the Australian Open tennis matches – we have DirecTv and they have special channels that show 5 or 6 different matches (no clue if other cable companies offer the same!). Because they’re 16 hours ahead of us, most of the really good matches come on after midnight, UGH! I’ve been taking a short nap each afternoon so I can stay up late to watch my favorites. Unfortunately most of my favorite women have been knocked out (Serena, Coco, Keys, Bencic) but I’m still rooting for Barty, Halep & Kvitova.
As for the guys, my top 4 favorites are still in it – Federer, Nadal, Wawrinka, Djokovic; and the local Aussie Nick Kyrgios is still in it too! Lots of great matches so far!
That’s about all for now, have a great rest of your weekend ๐Ÿ™‚
Staying on posting schedule
I don’t have a lot of running or quilting updates to share today.
I’m in between quilting projects right now – I need to start a commissioned quilt using the Dog Gone Cute pattern but I haven’t bought the fabric yet. And I have another commissioned t-shirt/memory quilt to make but I don’t want to start on that until I have the doggie quilt done…first in/first out ๐Ÿ™‚
Earlier this week I made the 4th block in the Cookbook QAL called Shine…the color is a little off in this picture, the center fabric is more Berry than red
As for running – today is the first C25K running day I’ve missed ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
We went to Myrtle Beach this weekend to negotiate with a builder to build a house on our lot. We came to terms, which is very exciting!! It’ll be 5-6 months before it will be done so although we have plenty of time to get ready to move – I fear it will creep up on us really fast!
I also got up at 4:30 a.m. the last two mornings to watch the Australian Open Championship matches! Both were excellent but factor all that in with drivingย back home today and I’m just too wiped out to run…I have zero energy.ย I think I’ll just skip over W4D3 and pick up the plan on Tuesday with W5D1.
And with that…I’m calling it an early night!
First finish of 2017
As I type this I’m still a bit stunned by all the top seeds that have been knocked out of the Australian Open…WOW! First Novak Djokovic loses in the second round and now Andy Murray falls. I tried so hard to stay up and watch the match but because of the time difference I shut the TV off at 1 a.m. and they had only finished two sets. I knew Zverev was playing well but I truly thought Andy would figure it out… alas, it was not to be.
The other top seed that fell while I slept was Angie Kerber! Coco Vandeweghe has been on fire recently and I had a feeling it was going to be a good match…but looking at the score it appears she steam-roller her. I’ll try to catch both of these matches on replay today. The AO title is up for grabs this year as both defending champs are out…this should be interesting.
I have my first quilty finish of 2017…The Kittens is bound and headed for the wash, it will be on it’s way to it’s new home tomorrow. YAY!!! This quilt took me much longer than it should have but I’m immensely pleased with how it turned out. Here are some pictures before washing.
(sorry they’re a little blurry ๐Ÿ˜ฆ ย couldn’t get DH to stand still)
Next on the agenda is a Dog Gone Cute quilt. This is for the same person who commissioned The Kittens for her MIL – but the doggie quilt is for her to keep.
I received another commission last week for a t-shirt/memory quilt from one of my neighbors. She’s saved her daughter’s favorite clothes over the last many years which I’ll be making into a quilt for her 10th birthday in Sept – so I have lots of time ๐Ÿ˜‰ ย I’ve already purchased the backing fabric – Sew Hope Full – in both white and black, I’ll figure out which one works best when I get to that point.
I’ve been keeping up with the Cookbook Quilt along – here’s a shot of the first three blocks. I’m using all Kona solids for this project and I really love how it looks so far!
I had another small finish this week from the APQ UFO challenge – this technically wasn’t an ‘unfinished object’ because I hadn’t ever started it but it’s been on my ‘to make list’ for a while so I added it to this challenge. January’s number was 6 and this got made – it’s the Charlotte, NC skyline pattern by Shannon Brinkley. I chose to make the small wall hanging size which measures 14×9 and I tried to use Carolina Panther colors. As you can see I had a little trouble keeping some of the buildings straight…I will definitely make this again in a larger size.
Lastly, I’ve been doing well with C25K – I completed the first two days of Week 3 during the week and saved Day 3 for today after lunch…
That’s all for now…Go Packers, Go Patriots!
