Catching up

I was traveling the last two weekends and missed putting up a post. Not much sewing happened during that time but let’s catch up.

I’ve completed all my blocks for the #grannycabinsewalong with Then Came June. I worked a little ahead because I knew I’d be traveling. Here are all the blocks up on my design wall…ooo I love it!!

I also started on a commissioned project for Christmas Placemats. This is a free paper-pieced pattern but I could not get the pieces to print out at the proper size so I had to draw them myself – eeek!!! Because of that I needed to sew a few ‘tests’ to make sure I got it right so I used scraps from the Christmas fabric bin. The top placemat is a mirror image of the pattern – ‘doh! Didn’t even think about that. In the second placemat I got the angle wrong on the thinner tree and on the outer trees (sheesh!) I’ve made adjustments for that so now it’s time to cut into the fabric the customer sent me…wish me luck!!!

I skipped my WW meeting for the last two weeks and honestly I’ve been a bit lax on watching what I’ve been eating so it was no surprise I was up 1.4 when I weighed in yesterday. It’s ok…really, it could’ve been much worse! I’m back on the eating plan today and I’m confident I’ll lose that and more.

Update on our other house: it’s officially on the market as of Friday!! If you know anyone moving to the greater Charlotte, NC area please share this with them. It’s a beautiful home and we were very happy there for 13 years.

And just for some ‘awwww’ factor, here are a few pics of my adorable great niece Campbell at her 2nd birthday party. She shared it with her cousin who turned two in Sept.

That’s all for now…enjoy the rest of your weekend 🙂

Esmerelda finished

Not only did I finish the commissioned Esmerelda quilt but it’s already been mailed and received…and good thing too because baby Lucy made an early arrival!

I’ve never used flannel for binding and it was a little tricky…it kept wanting to slip and slide all over the place, because of that I was a little unhappy with the finished look – but after it gets used and loved I’m sure I’m the only one that will notice! 🙂

DH’s cousin was over the moon happy when she received the quilt and sent me the most heart-felt message…got me a little choked up ❤ I can’t wait to see pictures of Lucy laying on or wrapped up in this quilt!

While I watched the US Open this week I made a few more scrappy improv blocks. I’m pulling my color bins and just putting scraps together until I can cut a 10″ block. It’s kind of fun having no pattern or instructions to follow :-p

Hurricane Dorian blew through Myrtle Beach on Thursday but we were spared the worst of it because the eye wobbled a bit more East than North – Thank God!! We still got gusts around 60mph and a ton of rain but we didn’t have any damage and never lost power – wow! That was our first hurricane living here and I’m not looking forward to any more!!

My WW studio was closed most of the week due to the impending storm but opened back up on Saturday, my weigh in day. I couldn’t believe that I actually dropped .4! I was so stressed out from the storm I was eating way too much but at least it was WW friendly food – I guess that helped! lol

That’s all for now…have a great week!!

Procrastination and a new project

When the procrastination monster strikes I usually start a new project…hahaha, somehow that makes perfect sense in my head!

I should be basting and quilting the commissioned memorial quilt but instead I just ‘had to’ start making a quilt I’ve been seeing on IG. It’s a pattern called Meadowland from Then Came Jane and there’s a hashtag on IG where it seems everyone is making it!!

I pulled some FQs I’ve been hoarding called Fleet and Flourish by Maureen Cracknell and finally gave in to the monster! I started cutting and piecing the blocks on Thursday…

img_20190704_220150_627

The first block I made had a few mistakes – oy! As I was making the flying geese using the ‘No waste’ method in the pattern, I was so focused on getting everything lined up that I didn’t even notice I had the fabric turned the wrong way!!! Ugh!

img_20190705_110742 img_20190705_110806

Front side of the block                                          Back side of the block

It wasn’t until I started piecing the flying geese into the block that I noticed my mistake. It was too late to turn back at that point so I just decided to ‘go with it’! My next mistake was not reading the pressing instructions…now I have a few significant bumps where the pieces intersect. This one I could fix but I think I’m just going to call this block my ‘tester’ and move on! I actually have 13 blocks cut and the size I’m making only needs 12…so unless I make more mistakes I’ll have one extra anyway 😉

Here are the 7 blocks I have finished so far… the pics are a little over-exposed because I keep taking these at night using the ‘brightner’ on my phone.

img_20190705_221243_533img_20190706_222101.jpg

Once I get the rest made I’ll need to turn my focus to the commission quilt… it’s so frustrating when I do these things!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update on my WW journey: I’m down 1.0 this week – YAY! Progress is good and I still feel like I can have pretty much anything I want but now I decide whether ‘spending’ the points on it is really worth it 😉
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

No updates on our other house, things are still moving forward with the estate sale and the sale of the house. Keep the good vibes coming ❤

Have a great rest of your weekend 🙂

Lazy Holidays

It’s been pretty low key around here for the last week. I was sick with a stomach bug on Christmas day – ugh!! I woke up at 3:30am with diarrhea, chills and a very sour stomach. I was able to go back to sleep for a little while but was back up before 7am again. I moved to the couch and around 10am finally ‘tossed my cookies’…sorry if this is too much information. I suffered through the rest of the day feeling like I’d been hit by 17 buses (no clue where that saying came from !?).

Needless to say, Christmas was postponed in our house until the next day. I felt a little better so we exchanged gifts and just hung out on the couch most of the day. Later, I fixed dinner but I couldn’t eat any of it 😦  I feel much better now so all’s well that ends well.

There was no sewing this past week – ugh – but I did talk with my neighbor about making changes to her commission quilt. As you may recall, in it’s current state it’s about 30 inches longer than it is wide and it will be too long for the full-size bed she plans to display it on so, we’re going to move one of the rows of shirts to the back side and position it at the top so if the quilt is folded down there is a little surprise of more shirts! (A big Thanks to Quilt Mouse for the suggestion!)

That will be my mission this week – unpick and resew the top and piece the backing.

Let’s hope the new year brings lots of good health, joy and adventure!

Lots to share

I don’t have any finishes this week but I have lots of pictures to share 😉

First up, I finally laid out all the t-shirts for the commission memories quilt I need to make. It’s a little messy but it gives me a template to follow once I have them all cut and stabilized.

img_20180921_131147_623

Next up, I FINALLY got around to making a test block for my design drawing – I looked back in Instagram when I originally posted this picture, it was Sept 2016!!! Oh my, I had no idea that much time had passed 😦

My original idea would be to have each grid square be 4″ finished – that would make the quilt 80″ overall. I was not ready to take that on so I visually divided the quilt into 4 quadrants and decided to have each grid square be 2″ and I set about making one of the quadrants.

img_20180922_090125_780

And here it is!!!! Woohoo! Squeeeeeeee! Can you tell I’m a little excited? In the drawing I used the only pencils I had which gave me a holiday feel but I wasn’t in the mood for that right now so I pulled 4 contrasting fabrics that I had enough on had to finish the quilt.

img_20180922_090125_781

And then I just HAD to see what it would look like finished so I put the picture in Word and rotated it to make this mock up. Oh boy!!! Now I really gotta finish this!!! 🙂  Looking at this mock up makes me think of a poppy flower…is it just me?

img_20180922_090125_790

If that wasn’t enough excitement, I happened to stumble upon a local quilt guild having a quilt show this weekend so of course I HAD to walk through. Here are just a few of the gorgeous quilts at the show

I was so intrigued by this last one that I went online to find the pattern…and purchased it in .pdf!!! Ugh, now I need to master Y seams!!!

Ok, I think that’s enough for today…have a great rest of the weekend!

Back in the groove

I failed to mention last week that while visiting my great niece her Momma gave me her old receiving blankets and asked me to make a toddler bed size quilt because she would be transitioning into one pretty soon.

I began thinking of a cute pattern and landed on a simple 4-patch/square design and without even hesitating I cut all the blankets into 10.5 squares and 5.5 squares…too bad I didn’t take a picture of those lovely stacks 😦

Here are the blocks on the design wall…and on the table because I couldn’t get them all to fit on the wall – this is going to be 70×90

20180827_201645.jpg

I spent all day yesterday piecing it together…while watching US Open tennis matches. Here’s the completed top on my bedroom floor.

img_20180901_152141_104

The lighting is horrible and the angle is pretty bad too but it was just too humid to take this outside for pictures – seriously, the deck was still damp from the overnight dew even at 6pm! ugh…I can’t wait for FALL!

I didn’t have anything big enough for the back – I didn’t want it to be pieced…so I hopped online to search for 108″ backing and found the perfect fabric! So this project will be put on hold until it arrives.

dotsy

Speaking of fall, I pulled my September Scrap Attack project…and look at this beautiful picture! Unfortunately it’s just a picture link on Pinterest so there’s no pattern or even a name I can give credit 😦

img_20180901_193452_627

Oh my…at first it looks like a lot of work but once I dissect it, it’s really just 9-patch blocks with heart applique blocks. I’m not going to make a bed size quilt so I won’t have near as many blocks to make.

I’ve already printed a heart shape from Google

heart-outline

…and I’ve already cut 3.5″ strips from my scraps to sew into groups of three…using a bit larger size will (hopefully) give this a bit of a modern touch – and the fabrics will help with that too 😉 Once the strips are sewn, I’ll cross cut them into 3.5″ strips and assemble them into 9-patch blocks. I’ve also got a stack of smaller pieces of fabric I can cut into 3.5″ squares if I need more.

20180902_082624

As if that’s not enough to work on…I have another memory quilt commission – here are three bags of shirts I need to deconstruct and apply stabilizer before determining the layout…she wants it to be random placement :-p

20180902_082739

And lastly, just because…here’s Miss Campbell at almost 10 months ❤ ❤ ❤

Just a tad late…

I’m still in a little bit of a sewing/quilting funk. This commissioned quilt project I’m working on using random clothes has really got me all wigged out! The clothes they gave me are SO.BRIGHT!

Here are the ‘bricks’ I’ve already cut and stabilized. I sent the customer this suggested layout to get her reaction and she likes it!! So I guess I won’t be adding in any blender fabrics!! I may still play with the placement to see if I can somehow make it a bit more cohesive but this is all I have to work with!!

memorialquilt1

If you want to offer any ideas or suggestions – I’m wide open to it 😀

I needed a break and I also needed a new table topper for fall so I pulled out my seasonal fabrics and put this little puppy together in one evening – it measures 14 inches square. I quilted curved lines on the pumpkin but the thread matches so well you can hardly see it. I may go back over it with black…or maybe not!

pumpkin

I’ve made no progress on the Redskin quilt other than deciding on the design I want to use…I’ve still got it on my ‘to-do’ list so there’s hope!

That’s all for now…I plan to pick up where I left off with this glass 😉

Sammie surgery

My little mini-schnauzer girl had to have surgery last week. She’s 9 years old and never had her teeth cleaned, the vet said it was time. She also suggested that while she was under  we take off some of the larger skin tags that had cropped up over the last couple of years, a total of 6, so we did that too. Sammie came through with flying colors but this Momma was a nervous wreck! The vet called while Sammie was still under to say that two of her lower front teeth were loose and she recommended taking them out, so I agreed.

I picked her up around 3pm, she was still a bit groggy and out of it but I got her home and made her something to eat and she gobbled it right up – that’s always a good sign! We got a prescription for pain meds and she only needed them for two days before she was back to her old self again…yay! Here’s a picture of two of the spots where skin tags were removed.

sammie

and here’s a closeup of her missing teeth…LOL

sammieteeth

I took off Friday to take care of Sammie but she slept most of the day so I worked in my sewing room. I finished up the Pumpkin table runner and started on my next commission tshirt quilt (yep, the first girl finally brought her shirts over!!)

tshirt clemson

This is not the final layout for this project, I just wanted to get an idea of size. I have lots of tshirt pieces left over so I may do a border with those, not sure yet.

I also put together a baby quilt top for my niece. They picked out the pink & gray fabrics (they’re having a girl!!) and gave me a few Pinterest shots they liked, thankfully it was pretty easy! I want to use a gray chevron flannel for the backing but wouldn’t you know it, none of my local stores had it in stock … so off to Fabric.com I went. I know, I know, I shouldn’t buy online but when it’s not available local there’s really not much I can do. My niece also asked if I could make a few receiving blankets so I got a couple extra yards of flannel and minky for that too. I need to have all this finished by the time I go up to Md for the baby shower on Aug 27…no problem!

A little closer look at the fabrics.

And while they were on Pinterest they stumbled across this adorable Tag Toy and asked if I could make it…um, I guess I could try…Ha! this should be fun!

So that was my week. The house in Myrtle Beach is coming along and we’ll be going down for a visit next weekend so I’ll have more pictures for my next post – which will probably be late 😉

Projects

Woohoo! I finished putting together the commissioned t-shirt quilt top

uvatshirtdone

I asked the client what she wanted for the backing fabric but she’s a little distracted as her father just had triple bypass surgery last week – thankfully, he’s doing well. I started looking around online and found a collegiate fabric for UVA and sent her the link. I told her No Rush, I just wanted to send it to her while I was thinking of it…she loved the idea so I ordered it yesterday.

With that project on the back burner I decided to work on another…while in Myrtle Beach a few weeks ago I visited a local quilting/fabric store with my friend. She had seen the Busy Bags I made last month for charity and wondered if I could make her one with a golf theme…I said sure! She found some fabrics she liked and I brought them home. Since I had a break from the t-shirt quilt I figured it was a great time to work on her bag. I cut all the fabric and fusible fleece one evening and put it together the next…voila’…done!

I can’t say I love the fabrics…but hey, it’s not mine so that really doesn’t matter!! 😉

I was itching to start something new so I pulled out a FQ bundle and started looking up patterns. I really liked the look of Afternoon Tango and thought my fabrics would work well, but now I’m not so sure…ugh!

afternoontango

The pattern calls for 9 FQ and this bundle only had 8 so I added a coordinating fabric from my stash…however once I added it to the mix I didn’t like it at. all. so I pulled them out, hence the missing strips. Now I’m not sure whether to keep going or scrap this idea and turn the strips into something else…argh!

I’d love to hear your thoughts…Thanks!

I got my baby back!

I picked up my sewing machine last Monday after we got back from Myrtle Beach. They said the reason the feed dogs were acting up is because too much lint had built up! I clean my machine after every project but I can only reach the area around the bobbin case. With a Pfaff you need to take it in for a service cleaning to get deep down inside and obviously it was time!! She’s working great now 🙂

Unfortunately I didn’t get much sewing in this week – we had friends stop by for a few days who were traveling from FL to MD and we’re about the halfway point. Before they arrived, I finished fusing the stabilizer to tshirts for the commissioned tshirt quilt I’m making but didn’t start piecing them together until our friends left.

tshirts

I played with the layout until I got the colors pretty well balanced – there are a lot of white shirts.

layout

I started trimming and piecing last night and hope to have the top put together by tomorrow morning because we have more friends coming in to visit tomorrow afternoon. They’re staying until Wed and I’ve taken time off from my day job so I should be able to get it done. The client hasn’t decided on the backing yet so I guess there’s no real hurry.

piecing

Other than this, I haven’t sewn anything!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve been sticking to my daily workout regimen and even ran with my running buddies yesterday!! We’re all signed up for the July 4th – 4 miler so I know I’ll get to run with them again soon but hopefully we can plan a few more weekend meetups before that.
Sunday 6/11:
Cardio: 30 min beginner HIIT video
Strength: 10 min ABS video
Stretching: 15 mins
