October update

I missed a few weeks posting so I’ll start off with what’s happened since the beginning of the month.

First, we went to Myrtle Beach on Thur 10/4 to have the final walk-through of our new house on Fri 10/5. On the surface everything looked fine but as my husband started really inspecting things we found a ton of minor issues – from missing door knobs & hinges to scuffs & marks on the floors and walls. As you can imagine we were NOT happy. There was a war of words with threats of legal action but I was finally able to calm the situation down and the builder will be addressing everything before we take possession of the house. We’re going back down Fri 10/26 and I pray it will all be done and we can move on from this horrible experience.

I was in a pretty bad funk after all that and I seemed to be punishing myself by not doing any sewing for about 7 days  :-p  but then I remembered I needed to finish the quilt for my great niece and I got my rear in gear!

The indoor lighting is pretty bad here but it’s all quilted and bound – it measures 72×90, plenty big for her new transition bed.

And then I went back into my funk until a few days ago when I finally started making some progress on the commission memory quilt. I called my neighbor to apologize for taking so long and she said ‘do not even give it another thought’…so sweet of her! But I did get a few inner rows pieced last week, I just need to keep the momentum going!

We celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary by going out for a nice dinner last night at Del Frisco’s in Charlotte. Both the food and service were amazing 🙂 We had the valet snap this picture as we were leaving…

That’s about all that’s been going on in the last few weeks…

Have an awesome rest of your weekend 🙂

Weathering the storm

I live about 20 minutes south of Charlotte, NC and for the past week we’ve been preparing for the effects of Hurricane Florence. This storm was traveling so slow it felt like it was never going to happen but Friday the winds started to arrive and yesterday we got heavy rain on and off. Last night the winds picked up a bit and we got even more rain…which is supposed to continue for the rest of today. We’re fortunate enough to live on very high ground so flooding won’t be an issue; rather we’re more worried about falling trees and losing power – so far, so good.

Of course I spent most of the time in my sewing room trying to keep myself occupied from my worries and I’ve got another small finish. I started this tumbler quilt several weeks ago when I finally broke down and bought the Accuquilt Tumbler die, I wrote about it here.

I’ve got about 4 quilts waiting to be basted but between the hot, humid weather and now this storm I just can’t get outside to use the spray basting…and I refuse to get down on the floor to pin baste! This tumbler quilt was the perfect size to glue baste on my ironing board so that’s what I worked on!

Here it is after I finished the quilting. I didn’t initially plan to quilt it so much but once I got started with the swirls I just kept going.

And a little close up

The backing is a flannel I picked up in Myrtle Beach earlier this year…I have to say, this made the FMQ a bit difficult because the backing would ‘grab’ or ‘stick’ to my sewing table/tray from time to time; it was the weirdest thing!

And here it is all trimmed and bound – I stepped out on the front porch to snap a picture with natural light; it finished 34×43.

That’s all for this week…once the weather clears I’ll be focused on getting four quilts basted so I can get some quilting done. My first priority is the receiving blanket quilt for my great niece.

Have a happy day wherever you are!

A better week

Let’s start with the best first…my great niece turned 3 months old last week…OMG, she is just too cute for words 😀

I did a bit better this week from a sewing perspective…

I mentioned in a previous post that I’d made two big pillowcases from some ‘what was I thinking?‘ fabric to use as a receptacle for scraps too small for me to work with. I finally filled up both and I’ve sewn them shut, they measure 22×34. I contacted a local dog shelter last week and they said they would love to have them! Yay, I’ll be dropping them off this week.

I made quite a bit of progress on my February scrapattack2018 project called Stoplight. So much progress that I’ve finished all the blocks I need for a throw size quilt (approx 54×60)…YAY!!!

And here they all are laid out on my bedroom floor…sorry for the fuzzy picture, I didn’t have my glasses on so it looked good to me at the time!

I made some minor progress on the t-shirt quilt but when I took a picture of my design wall it really didn’t look much different than last time 😦

We’re finally starting to see some progress on the house in Myrtle Beach…here are some shots our friends sent us on Friday:

Bowl cozies!

I made a few more bowl cozies this week by request…ha, maybe this could become a little side job!

These four were made from a pack of 10″ squares of Batik fabrics and are already sold.

The teal ones not quite in the picture were shown in my Jan 14 post and are going to a neighbor across the street from me along with the other two in this shot.

I also made two others that I seem to have forgotten to take pictures of, argh! They were made for a friend to give to her son who just moved into his first apartment. They were shades of gray & black.

I’m still working on the t-shirt quilt, I’ve cut all of the shirts and now need to play with layout. I also have four gymnastics leotards to fit into the layout but haven’t cut those just yet.

I have not even touched the wedding dress yet…eeek, that’s freaking me out! I did find some design options online and sent those to the customer. She said she was fine with whatever I do – oy, that much creative freedom scares me :-/  I plan to start on it after I have the t-shirt top completed, I have a little time to build up my nerve!!

I’ve made no progress on my Scrap Attack project for Jan but I hope to change that today. It’s a gray, rainy day here…perfect for sewing!!

Since I don’t have any other photos to share, here’s a gratuitous shot of my 10 week old great-niece

Oh yeah forgot to mention I haven’t been running 😦 I took an antibiotic (Levaquin) earlier this month for a sinus infection and I’m having some side-effects. My ankles and my right wrist have been hurting and feeling rather weak. I called the Dr and unfortunately this is known side-effect of that medicine – and it can last weeks or months – UGH!!! I’m pretty bummed about all this 😦 I’ve been drinking water like crazy hoping to flush it out of my system and I do feel a tiny bit better – although that could just be in my head. I’d recommend steering clear of that medicine unless you have no other choice!!

That’s all for now…

Sunday

Let’s start off with the most fun topic…my great niece! She’s 9 weeks old and her parents just posted these pics. Awwwww, my heart is so full for this little red-haired cutie pie ❤

She was only 18 days old the last time I held that little bundle…hopefully I can get back up there soon.

I’ve been doing a little sewing this week – I finally completed the last block I needed for The Honeypot Bee, this is from November. There were multiple block options each month but sometimes I didn’t make either and other times I made both…I ended up with a total of 21 blocks.

I put them up on my design wall this week just to get an idea of what I had and where I was going to need some sashing and/or fillers. This is not my final layout but you can see I still have my work cut out for me to make this cohesive :-s

We also had a winter weather event here last week…we got about 2-3″ of snow and it stuck around for a few days until the temps finally climbed back to normal yesterday.  I enjoyed watching it come down since I work from home and didn’t have to worry about going out in it, but down here in SC most people just stay home anyway when this happens.

I did get a few orders for bowl cozies after I posted pics on FB & IG of the ones I made last week. Here’s one set for a neighbor:

That same neighbor took the other cozies to her work and not only sold those but one of her co-workers asked for more in specific colors. These are almost done, just need to top-stitch around the outside.

20180121_090920

I did make a very little bit of progress on a new tshirt quilt commission. This is for a different neighbor whose daughter turned 12 recently. She’s provided shirts from baby to pre-teen sizes and a few gymnastics leotards too. This is going to be interesting!! Here are the few shirts I’ve cut so far

20180121_092229

And lastly, I’ve also taken another new commission – this one is going to be very tricky for me. Yet another neighbor asked me to take her wedding dress and make two small quilts out of it for her two daughters (one in college the other in high school). She was quite adamant that she does not want either of her daughters to wear her dress but wants to use it to give them a memento…so…I’ve been scouring Google and Pinterest for ideas. Here’s the front & back of the dress

There’s plenty of fabric to work with but I’ve NEVER worked with this fabric before…so if you have any pointers or suggestions, PLEASE help a girl out!! 😀

That’s about it for now…I’ll be watching football later today – here are my pics:
