Short & sweet

I’m back in our ‘old’ house for a few days to put the finishing touches on packing and hopefully get the truck & movers lined up for the furniture. DH is still dragging his feet but he’s getting better :-s

I have a few pictures to share of the new house and a new quilt project I started last week. Yup, I no sooner got my sewing machine setup and I just HAD TO start something!!

First up here’s a few pics of the new house

One side of the kitchen all setup. I lost about 4 cabinets from the old house to the new one so I had to figure out where everything would fit!
And here’s the other side, facing the living room.

This is one side of my new Happy Place!! I plan on adding a few book shelves for fabric storage and DH is going to make me a design wall out of insulation board…so more to come!

And here’s a shot of the Criss Cross quilt I’m working on with all of my solids stash & scraps. I plan on adding two more columns but that will have to wait until I get back there 😦

That’s all for now…have a great rest of your weekend!!

If you’ve ever moved you know how exhausting it is…especially if you’ve lived in your current home for 13+ years. How the hell did we accumulate all this stuff?? That’s the blessing and curse of having lots of storage space in our current home 😦

We’ve been weeding out stuff as we go through every room – deciding what will stay for the Estate Sale, what will get trashed and the rest is getting packed.

Here’s what we’ve got stacked up in the garage to load on the truck tomorrow. We’ll be adding to it today with another bed to break down and my office to pack up. I saved those for the very last.

I’ve torn down my sewing room and hidden in the middle of all those boxes is all my fabric stash (!) DH couldn’t believe how much ‘stuff’ came out of that room!! Here’s what it looks like at the moment

I still need to shrink wrap that cart and breakdown the table where my Pfaff sits. The Pfaff is going in the car with me along with a few other items I want to keep in my control.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to ‘pack’ my over-sized cutting mats? I don’t want to roll or bend them…my only idea is to sandwich them between the box springs! Help?

The rest of the house looks like this – boxes and paper everywhere. We were extremely lucky to have neighbors who moved into our area last year and who used professional movers…they gave us all their boxes! At first we didn’t think we’d need that many but we’re going through that stockpile pretty fast!

That’s about all for now…wish me luck for tomorrow and the rest of the week as we head on down to Myrtle Beach to unload and unpack. Ugh, my back hurts just saying that!!

Myrtle Beach update

I’m posting this from the new house in Myrtle Beach!! No we haven’t officially moved in yet but we have just enough basics that we can sleep here – LOL. We have beds and some kitchen supplies so it feels more like a hotel than a house at the moment. We’re planning the big move at the end of the month – keep your fingers crossed for me!!!

Here are a few shots of our make-shift living spaces:

  1. Kitchen and current workspace

1a. Check out our new plates…fitting don’t you think?

2. Master Bedroommvimg_20190310_092954

3. Living room (Poor Sammie is so used to having rugs to lay on, I threw one of my quilts on the floor for her but she’s in her dog bed in this picture!)img_20190310_093008

4. My new desk that DH & I put together yesterday…no chair yet 😦  (the view out the window is of my neighbor’s house and the 11th tee on the golf course we back up to)img_20190309_163739

5. The electric fireplace TV console…for the huge TV hubby had to have! By the way, the fireplace is excellent…I highly recommend (not affiliated in any way!)mvimg_20190307_100159

6. Last but not least, this is where my sewing room will be

We’ve been here since Wed night and will be heading back to our other house tomorrow. I’m surprised we survived here for 5 night with so little stuff – maybe that’s a sign that we don’t ‘need’ so much!!

A new project

In my last post I said I was getting the itch to start something new and that’s exactly what I did…but at least it’s not another quilt top! I follow Sarah of Confessions of a Fabric Addict on Instagram and last week she posted this picture of a mesmerizing quilt block that I just had to try out.

She calls it the disappearing hourglass glass block and it looks a lot more difficult than it really is. I pulled some leftover Batiks 10″ blocks I had in my stash and followed the tutorial on her blog, here are my results:

Each block finishes at 16.5″ (they’re just stacked in a line for the sake of this picture). At first I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with these beauties, I don’t have any more of these batiks so I can’t make more blocks then I realized they’d make perfect pillow covers!

I found some neutral fabric in my stash for the backs and have started quilting them, hopefully I get these done before the end of the day…I’ll post finished pictures next week.

We’re headed to Myrtle Beach late next week and we’re taking both vehicles which will be packed to the gills with stuff we won’t need for the next 3-4 weeks. DH has finally gotten the ‘bug’ to get in gear with our move and told me yesterday we’ll be completely moved by March 27. I sure hope so!!

I already have a business trip planned for April 29 and I made my flight arrangements from Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) 😮 That will be my first time using that airport – we’ll see how that goes 😉

That’s all for now…have a great rest of your weekend 😀

I’m getting there

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post and I finally started quilting the t-shirt memory quilt…but…there was an issue, of course!

Because this quilt is so big and heavy, I moved my sewing machine to the dining room table so I could use it to help support the weight of the quilt. I got everything setup and I started doing my meander pattern. I was humming along and got about 1/3 through when I stopped to check the back… cue the ‘dun, dun, dun’ music!

Omg, there were ripples and tucks everywhere!!! I just about cried 😦  Actually, the very first section I quilted was fine but everything else was a mess. I let it sit for a few days trying to think of a way to salvage the quilting but I finally faced the truth – there’s no way to salvage it. I didn’t even have the stomach take a picture of it!

I reached out to a quilting friend to ask for tips or tricks for ripping it out and she said to ‘work from the back’. Cut the thread in one spot, move a few inches away and cut again and use the seam ripper to lift the thread out. After I got the hang of it, the ripping went pretty fast but I was still grumbling about it the whole time. I was also trying to figure out how I was going to prevent it from happening again!

I laid the quilt out face down on my bedroom floor and smoothed out the backing…the only choice to keep it from moving again was to pin it – UGH, I hate pinning! But that’s what I did, I pinned it from the back which in hindsight was not the smartest thing to do if you’re quilting from the top!! LOL Will this torture ever end? LOL

I got it back to the dining room and started quilting again…this time it worked fine! I’m over halfway done and will finish the quilting today – whoop whoop!

I looked back in my posts to see when I started this puppy –  September!! Oh my…I’m so embarrassed it’s taken me this long to get to this point…but it is what it is.

In other news…we still haven’t moved to Myrtle Beach yet. DH has been dragging his feet but we finally figured out what was wrong. Here’s a classic case of what NOT to do when taking pills:

DH takes four B12 vitamins every morning as instructed by his doctor (he’s deficient). I order them from Amazon and last month he asked me to reorder because he was getting low. When the new shipment came in, he commented they look different from last time. I told him I ordered the same thing as last time so we started investigating.

Last Feb, he asked me to buy him a new non-habit forming sleep aid from Unisom called Sleep Mini’s. As I always do, I checked Amazon and they had a 6-pk on sale so we got them (that adds up to 360 pills). When they came in, DH removed them from their original packaging and put them in an  empty B12 bottle – I think you can see where this is going.

When his B12 supply started getting low last year, he refilled it with the Sleep Mini’s without even giving it another thought. Bottom Line: for about 3 months he was mistakenly taking 4 Sleep Mini’s every morning instead of B12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No wonder he was so lethargic and out of it!

DH learned a HUGE lesson – do not take pills out of their original packing!! He’s been off those pills for almost a month now and he’s feeling more like his old self every day – whew!

We have made some progress in Myrtle Beach – we had internet installed and we got CPI to install the alarm system with all the new bells & whistles. I can do everything from my smart phone: arm/disarm, open/close the garage door, see who’s at the front door with the door bell cam. It’s pretty neat. We also got the fence installed so Sammie can run free in the back yard. And last week, DH drove down for the delivery of our new mattresses. Next up is getting DirecTV.

Right now the planned move date is early March.

I’ll end it there…have a great rest of the weekend.

Still procrastinating

Yeah, yeah, yeah…I’m still procrastinating on that commissioned t-shirt quilt. Needless to say I won’t be taking on another one of these any time soon. I’m seriously burnt out on this type of project 😦

Over the past two weeks, I did actually finish re-working the top by pulling out one of the sections and moving it to the back…and last weekend DH helped me get the monster basted but… since then it’s been hanging over the ironing board in my sewing room untouched. Even though I’ve put it on my To-do list every day for the last week, I’ve just ‘ignored’ it 😦 Grrrr, I can be so frustrating – LOL!

We are still planning our move to Myrtle Beach and have F.I.N.A.L.L.Y. picked a date – Feb 9th – so I’ve REALLY got to get a move on this quilt if I have any hope of finishing it before I have to pack up my sewing room – YIKES!

Speaking of moving – I’ve contacted Penske to get a quote for the truck rental, I’ve contacted a local moving/hauling company to get a quote for the manpower to load said truck. Once we make the reservation for the loading they’ll work with their franchise in Myrtle Beach to reserve manpower on the other end to unload said truck. It’s all starting to come together and we’ll be in serious packing mode very soon.

That’s about all for now…if you have any spare motivation, send it my way so I can get that quilt done!

ttfn 😉

YES! Finally, the house in Myrtle Beach is officially finished and completely ours! This journey has taken 22 months from contract to completion and has been fraught with so many frustrations but we’ve finally crossed the finish line! **cue huge sigh of relief**

The final hours of negotiation were so stressful and at times I thought we would have to get lawyers involved (*cue gagging) but eventually everyone acted like adults and we came to a settlement. We were so relieved to have it all behind us, we only captured these two pictures before leaving

We’ve already ordered the window blinds and if we’re lucky they’ll be ready for install when we go back down for Thanksgiving… I’ll be sure to capture room by room shots on that visit! The house is beautiful and we’re very happy with the results however, it’ll take some time for us to get over the bitterness of how long this process took…but we’ll get there.

We haven’t landed on an exact moving date yet – it will probably be some time in January.

Because of all that stress, I’ve spent very little time in my sewing room…which is the exact opposite of what I should be doing!! Sewing & quilting relaxes me so I really need to carve out more time for that!

I did get a few stitches accomplished this week, first I completed two charity blocks for Carol at From My Carolina Home I plan to make a few more and then send them to her to put into a quilt.

I also did a little work on a commission baby quilt for my husband’s cousin. She messaged me several weeks ago and wanted a gray owl quilt to give to her newest grand daughter for Christmas. I found this cute pink & gray owl fabric for the front and a gray dot flannel for the back. This is a whole cloth quilt so now that I have it basted I just need to get it quilted and bound.

That’s about all for now…if you don’t hear from me for a while just know that I’ll be packing & moving…UGH!

Have a great rest of your weekend 🙂
