Sewing & quilting…no running

I’ve been working on some sewing projects over the last week.

First up is a new table topper I made to represent summer…I love the little quilted clouds!! I had a bit of help from the ‘footprints in the sand’ fabric and the stripey binding reminds me of a beach umbrella so I’d say mission accomplished!

Next up is a WIP I’ve had basted for probably 4 months now! Ugh…I started quilting on it last week and today I finally finished it – whoop whoop!  Here is it laying on the deck in full sunlight…

This is a shot showing the back…before I put the binding on.

It measures 74×84 and to give a size comparison, here it is laying on our king size bed. It’s in the wash now getting all crinkly good…it’ll be ready for the first cool day of fall – ha – hopefully many months from now!!

I have not run – AT ALL –  since returning from my business trip a week ago Friday 😦  It’s been unbearably hot here and although there are other options I could’ve checked into for running indoors…I simply did not do it. The temps are not supposed to get any better in the next 10 days so…I’m going to need to figure something out! Come July, I need to start training in earnest for the Half Marathon in Myrtle Beach in October…and I’m not even sure I could go 3 miles right now.

Happy Sunday! ttfn…

Busy week

I just realized I didn’t post my W1D3 workout last week… I think I may be getting my legs and lungs back, ha – but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, it’s only Week 1!!

Last week I also made some Christmas cookies…Hubby likes the Tollhouse Chocolate Chip cookie recipe however he doesn’t like the chocolate chips!! So I make the cookies for him and substitute extra nuts in place of the chips, I guess they should be called Walnut cookies! I also made a batch of Oatmeal cookies for me…my favorite. Here’s the ‘in process’ mess…

If you’re a Weight Watchers member you know they updated their Smart Points plan last week…it’s now called Freestyle. Everything still has Smart Points but there are many, many more 0 point foods now – like Chicken Breast, Fish, Beans and Eggs. Clearly the plan guides you to choose lean protein over other foods.

I saw an Instant Pot recipe for Chicken Taco soup and decided to give it a try. OH!EM!GEE! It was fantastic!! Very satisfying & filling and two servings (1 cup each) were only 2 smart points!! The points come from the Taco Seasoning mix and the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing seasoning mix. This couldn’t have been any easier – just dump it all in at one time, set at High pressure for 30 mins and it’s done!!!

I finally finished the Redskins top…woohoo! It measures 75×84 so it will be nice and big to cover DH while he’s watching the games. And with the way the Redskins have been playing he’ll need the extra comfort! Ha! Of course that means I’ve got to get it basted, quilted and bound before he can actually use it! I used a couple of cheap tshirts I found online, some yardage of Burgundy & Gold and a few pieces of the backing fabric I had left over. It’s not a brilliant design but it’ll serve the purpose 😀  I plan to do the quilting in a yellow/gold thread which should add some interest to all the burgundy yardage… hmmm, must start thinking about what I’m gonna do in all that open space!

That’s about all for now…I plan to do Week 2 Day 1 a little later today when the temps get above 40 degrees! so I may be putting up another post later 😉

Two weeks worth!

***Fair warning: this is a picture heavy post***

I missed posting last week but I had a really good reason – I was in Maryland visiting my new Great niece!! OMG she is just the cutest, sweetest baby EVER! (Ha, I’m sure all Great Aunts say that…lol). Just look at Miss Campbell Elizabeth:

It was so hard to leave but after 6 days (!) I was ready to get back home. I missed DH and my fur baby…and I was itching to get back to my sewing room too!

First thing I did was finish up an old UFO (unfinished object) I started a few years back when I wanted to learn applique. This was a block of the month I followed from Jacquelynne Steves called Cozy Afternoon. The top had been done for a long time so I finally pulled it out, basted it and quilted all over it.

No specific plan for this – it measures 45″ square…I’ll offer it for sale on Facebook for $70, if there are no takers it’ll sit in my ‘done’ pile until I decided to donate it.

I’ve also started working on a Washington Redskins quilt for DH – after their extremely poor performance Thursday night I’m really not excited about making it but I’ve had it on my ‘to-do’ list for way too long so I’m just going to get ‘er done! Here’s part of it on my design wall, I still need to add a section on the right of the t-shirts. When it’s all done it should measure 75×84…whew!

I took a break today to put up a few Christmas decorations. As you may recall we’re supposed to be moving to Myrtle Beach (yeah that’s taking much much longer than anticipated) and I really didn’t want to pull out all my decorations just to have to pack them up when we move so I’ve only pulled out our pre-lit tree and a quilt I made last year to decorate the living room.

I then realized I didn’t have a Christmas table topper so I went right into the sewing room and made one! When I flipped my wall calendar to December there was an adorable snowman quilt which gave me the idea for this table topper. I pulled out my small bin of Christmas fabric and went to town – I really need to embellish this with some buttons for his eyes and mouth, and for his mid-section 🙂

And to top all that off, I’ve re-started the Couch-to-5k program (again!). The temps here in SC have been pretty mild so it was really easy to get outside. Week 1 Day 1 in the books…and it wasn’t pretty. My lungs are definitely out of condition – I was huffing and puffing through the first 4 intervals and I was only running 60 seconds!!! Ugh! More evidence that I’m sorely out of shape :-/

That’s all for now…have a great weekend and week ahead!! 😀

A little bit of everything

I think I’m in a bit of a sewing funk…and I think it’s because of the commission quilt I’ve taken on. The customer provided clothes from a recently departed Aunt to use in making a quilt for the Uncle, but I gotta tell ya these clothes are not so easy to work with. The colors are bright and bold and some have pretty loud patterns. Not to mention the fabrics are not cotton, it’s a mix of poly, rayon, spandex and velveteen – I have no idea how I’m going to make this into a quilt!!  😦  Ok enough whinning, I’ll just have to figure it out!

I’m planning a brick wall/subway tile design, here’s a peak at some of the 5×10″ pieces I’ve already cut

memorialquilt

And here are a few more I haven’t cut into yetmemorialquilt2

I think I’m going to need to get some sort of ‘blender’ fabric to tone it all down and give it some cohesion (for you Project Runway fans, I can hear Tim Gunn in my head “This is a make-it-work moment”!) Now you can see why I’m in a funk!!

On a brighter note, I finished the Clemson t-shirt quilt…woooohoooo!!! I took it outside for pictures right before dusk so please excuse the sun spots 😉

The 00 in the lower right corner is appliqued from extra t-shirt pieces and represents the year she graduated.

I’m not sure if I mentioned this before but I’ve been wanting to make a Redskins quilt for my hubby and a few months ago I bought some fabric online(!) that I thought matched the tshirt pieces I’ve already cut & stabilized…LOL, Nope! So last week I finally took the tshirt pieces to the fabric store and matched them up to the correct Burgundy and Gold shades…wow, that ‘gold’ is pretty bright but it matches the tshirt!!!

redskins

I’ve been playing with different design ideas and I think I’ve found one I like…we’ll see if I can get this done before football season is over!!

~~~
Last but not least, I went to our local botanical gardens Friday night – they’re hosting a Chinese Lanterns exhibit and it was beautiful!!! I didn’t start taking pictures until I saw the Elephants (my favorite) but there were all kinds of animals like hippos, dinosaurs, frogs, alligators, butterflies, bears and many, many more.
That’s all for now…have a GREAT day!!
A little behind
I didn’t get around to posting last week because I was traveling so let me try to catch up now.
Last Friday I flew to Maryland to spend a few days with my niece and to attend her baby shower. As you may recall from my last post she had sent me a bundle of pink & gray fat quarters they wanted turned into a quilt (yes, she’s having a girl!). It only took me a few days to complete that project so I also made her a few receiving blankets and an elephant tag toy – you can read about that here.
Anytime I go back to Md I always hunt down some good crabs and I was not disappointed this time! We went to a restaurant called Fifer’s in Fort Smallwood.
The Baby Shower was on Sunday…they had it at their house and handled all the details. I helped them pickup the cake and balloons that morning and we finalized all the food & decorations. I’ll spare you the hundreds of pictures and just show a few – they’ve already picked out her name too: Campbell Elizabeth
How cute is this cake!!! ❤
What a creative way to ‘wrap’ the gift!
I flew home Monday afternoon and haven’t spent much time in my sewing room but I did get a little bit done. I finally got around to completing the August Honey Pot Bee block and since I was on a roll I did September too!
HPB sept
Since I got the September one done so early, there’s a second block option for Sept that I may make as well  😉
I also put this top together…I had to set it aside in my “Tops” box (waiting to be basted, quilted & finished) so I can work on a few commissioned projects.
plus top
I picked up a new commissioned job to do quilting & binding on a cross stitch blanket (pictures next week) and I finally got my client to pick out backing fabric for the Clemson tshirt quilt. I had to order it online so it should be here early next week.
I’ve been watching the US Open for the last week…lots of great stories but my highlights are Roger & Rafa (how do they continue to play at that level?!!)  and all the US Ladies that are doing so well!
And I’m looking forward to another season of NFL…my team, the Redskins, isn’t predicted to do very well so as usual I’ll cheer on my back up team, the Patriots!
That’s about it for now…let me know what you’ve been working on!
