Lots of sewing going on

It’s a new year so of course I’ve started a few new habits…we’ll see how long I stick with them. I know that sounds negative but if I look at my history, it seems to be what I do. Start out with big plans in January only to fizzle out at some point. So here goes:

First of all I’m doing a challenge on IG started by a quilting friend last year with her sister called #dosomethingquiltyeveryday They did this last year and I loved the idea but never really joined in – however I started out on Jan 1 this year and I’ve posted something every day so far!! Woohoo and I’ve gotten a lot done too.

I mailed off the commissioned tshirt quilt to it’s new home. Surprisingly enough it got there in one day! I used the medium flat rate box with USPS, dropped it off on Monday morning and she posted this pic on Facebook the next evening!!! She was so happy and grateful ❤

I’ve started making the Plaid-ish quilt by Erica at Kitchen Table Quilting. This FREE pattern has been on my bucket list for a little while and I kept seeing pics of others making; I just couldn’t wait any longer so I jumped in last week. Here are a few of the progress pics I posted on IG – oh and this is all from my scrap bins!!

“Dark” blocks all cut
“Dark” blocks pieced, “Light” pieces laid out

My plan is to layout the “Mid value” blocks today and start piecing a few. The beauty of the #dosomethingquiltyeveryday challenge is it’s making me go into my sewing room every day and do something even if it’s just laying things out or sewing one or two seams – yay!

I’m also trying to create a habit of walking at least 15 minutes every day. Nothing too daunting at this point, I just want to create a habit that will stick. I really don’t move enough – I sit at a desk all day and then sit at my sewing machine at night. Ha! Not good! I’ve been doing really well with it, I actually started Monday 12/30 and haven’t missed a day yet! I’m using a paper planner this year and I’ve got a habit tracker sticker on the monthly page for January where I can see it every day. A few more weeks of this and I should have a habit!! I listened to the book Atomic Habits by James Clear a few weeks ago so I’m following his suggestion to start small and get the habit in place before making it bigger, sounds plausible!

I’m also trying to be more consistent with cleaning my house so I’m following the Fly Lady program; if you want to learn more you can visit her website by clicking the link or you can follow along with Steph the Secret Slob as she breaks it down for newbies. I found her videos easy to watch and her way of adopting the program resonated with me. I’ve been doing OK with this so far in 2020, I only missed one day :-p

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I weighed in at WW yesterday, I was fully expecting to hit the 10# mark…but it was not to be 😦 UGH! I really tried hard to stay within my points budget and I walked every day last week but I guess it’s gonna take a little more time! Onward and upward!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We go back to Charleston next week for Sammie’s 30 day follow up. We’ve noticed she’s been acting a little weird the last few weeks – nothing really bad, just different from her ‘normal’ self. She’s been very restless at night when it’s time to go to bed. She usually gets up in bed and stays there all night but recently she’ll get down and lay on the hardwood floor – like she’s hot and needs to cool down. She’ll stay there for a few hours and then in the middle of the night she’ll get up in bed. She’s also been sleep really hard, what I mean is it’s hard to wake her up. My husband and I both experienced a moment of panic when we tried to wake her and she wouldn’t move!! Finally we shook her pretty hard and she opened her eyes…that was pretty scary! I don’t know if it’s the meds, her age or her illness, we’ll ask the doctor next week and see what she thinks. Other than that Sammie is doing really well, still running and playing as usual.

That’s all for now…have a great rest of the weekend!

Getting things done

As mentioned last week, I finished the top made of my great niece’s receiving blankets and had to order fabric for the backing…it arrived on Thursday. When I saw this fabric online I wasn’t sure if the lines were part of the weave or part of the print and I was a bit worried…

dotsy

Thankfully it’s part of the print and it gives the fabric a bit of a vintage look. Since this is 108″ wide I only need to make one cut and it will be ready for basting.

Next up, I continued to work on my Sept Scrap Attack project and made excellent progress…the top is done!!!

I took it outside to get a shot in sunlight

And I gave the IG swirl a try

And one more shot up on my design wall.

I’m so tickled with how this turned out with all those happy, bright colors. It measures 63×72. This will now need to go into the ‘waiting’ pile as I prioritize finishing the receiving blanket quilt and working on the memory quilt commission project.

Speaking of that, I pulled all those shirts out last week and deconstructed them…now I need to get down on my bedroom floor and work on a layout – my knees and back are already dreading it!

An update on the house in Myrtle Beach: we’re supposed to go there next week to close on the house and I’d be so happy about that if it weren’t for a little storm called Florence! I just can’t believe our luck!!! 😦  So we’ll wait and watch to see what happens and hope the storm takes a hard right out to sea!!

That’s all for now…enjoy the rest of your weekend 🙂

Stops and starts

No running this week – ugh! It’s rained almost every day and I just couldn’t muster the motivation to get out in it…so I no sooner started up the C25K program and I’ve stopped. The weather forecast shows a chance of heavy rain every day for the next 10 days…wow 😦

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I FINALLY finished up the commissioned tshirt quilt – can I get a Whoop Whoop! I used the left overs from the backing fabric for binding and got DH to hold it up outside for a good natural light photo. The client was extremely happy and didn’t seem phased at all that it took almost 5 months to complete :-/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I started on my May Scrap Attack project using the design on the left side below. I decided to dip into my bin of solids and I’m using a marbled tan for the center pieces and sashing. This will be a very bright and vibrant baby blanket when finished.

I pulled out my Accuquilt cutter and used the die that came with it which cuts 4.5″ squares…however I ignored the instructions to only cut 6 layers at a time and started folding larger pieces into the squares…ugh! double ugh!! It wasn’t until I started piecing these 9-patches that I noticed something was off. Some of the squares weren’t completely square because all those extra layers of fabric had shifted as I cranked them through the cutter – when will I ever learn not to take short cuts? smh! Needless to say I had to ‘square up’ all my squares, talk about doubling my work 😦

That’s about all for today…ttfn!

Busy, busy

I had a bit of unexpected travel last week which means I didn’t get as much sewing & quilting done as I had planned. A dear friend from Maryland lost her husband rather suddenly so I traveled to spend a few days with her during the services. I left on Thursday and got home yesterday [just in time for the Superbowl…too bad my team didn’t win but it was still a pretty good game to watch].

I did do a few things last week before my trip: I finished the top for the baby-size Scrap Attack 2018 January project. I pulled this from a tin where I have placed tiny sized Pinterest pictures of projects I plan to use my scraps to complete. This one was the “Mother’s Own” block – free from Fat Quarter Shop. A simple white border and now it’s ready to be basted & quilted – it measures 34×44.

20180130_204031.jpg

Before I left I pulled my Scrap Attack 2018 project for February; this one is a picture of the finished quilt called Stoplight by Keepsake Quilting.

scrapattack2018feb

Before I left on my trip, I also laid out all the tshirts for the commission quilt and landed on this layout. I sent the pic to the customer and she was pleased, now I need to finish putting stabilizer on the shirts and start squaring up and sewing. I’ll need to add some sashing/filler for some of the pieces but overall it looks like it should fit together pretty well.

please excuse the doggie steps – I laid this out on my bedroom floor

That’s about all for now. I took off work today so I plan to get in my sewing room and make progress…ttfn!

Bowl cozies!

I made a few more bowl cozies this week by request…ha, maybe this could become a little side job!

These four were made from a pack of 10″ squares of Batik fabrics and are already sold.

The teal ones not quite in the picture were shown in my Jan 14 post and are going to a neighbor across the street from me along with the other two in this shot.

I also made two others that I seem to have forgotten to take pictures of, argh! They were made for a friend to give to her son who just moved into his first apartment. They were shades of gray & black.

I’m still working on the t-shirt quilt, I’ve cut all of the shirts and now need to play with layout. I also have four gymnastics leotards to fit into the layout but haven’t cut those just yet.

tshirts1.28

I have not even touched the wedding dress yet…eeek, that’s freaking me out! I did find some design options online and sent those to the customer. She said she was fine with whatever I do – oy, that much creative freedom scares me :-/  I plan to start on it after I have the t-shirt top completed, I have a little time to build up my nerve!!

I’ve made no progress on my Scrap Attack project for Jan but I hope to change that today. It’s a gray, rainy day here…perfect for sewing!!

Since I don’t have any other photos to share, here’s a gratuitous shot of my 10 week old great-niece

Oh yeah forgot to mention I haven’t been running 😦 I took an antibiotic (Levaquin) earlier this month for a sinus infection and I’m having some side-effects. My ankles and my right wrist have been hurting and feeling rather weak. I called the Dr and unfortunately this is known side-effect of that medicine – and it can last weeks or months – UGH!!! I’m pretty bummed about all this 😦 I’ve been drinking water like crazy hoping to flush it out of my system and I do feel a tiny bit better – although that could just be in my head. I’d recommend steering clear of that medicine unless you have no other choice!!

That’s all for now…

Sunday

Let’s start off with the most fun topic…my great niece! She’s 9 weeks old and her parents just posted these pics. Awwwww, my heart is so full for this little red-haired cutie pie ❤

She was only 18 days old the last time I held that little bundle…hopefully I can get back up there soon.

I’ve been doing a little sewing this week – I finally completed the last block I needed for The Honeypot Bee, this is from November. There were multiple block options each month but sometimes I didn’t make either and other times I made both…I ended up with a total of 21 blocks.

hpb nov

I put them up on my design wall this week just to get an idea of what I had and where I was going to need some sashing and/or fillers. This is not my final layout but you can see I still have my work cut out for me to make this cohesive :-s

all hpb blocks

We also had a winter weather event here last week…we got about 2-3″ of snow and it stuck around for a few days until the temps finally climbed back to normal yesterday.  I enjoyed watching it come down since I work from home and didn’t have to worry about going out in it, but down here in SC most people just stay home anyway when this happens.

snow

I did get a few orders for bowl cozies after I posted pics on FB & IG of the ones I made last week. Here’s one set for a neighbor:

20180121_090748

That same neighbor took the other cozies to her work and not only sold those but one of her co-workers asked for more in specific colors. These are almost done, just need to top-stitch around the outside.

20180121_090920

I did make a very little bit of progress on a new tshirt quilt commission. This is for a different neighbor whose daughter turned 12 recently. She’s provided shirts from baby to pre-teen sizes and a few gymnastics leotards too. This is going to be interesting!! Here are the few shirts I’ve cut so far

20180121_092229

And lastly, I’ve also taken another new commission – this one is going to be very tricky for me. Yet another neighbor asked me to take her wedding dress and make two small quilts out of it for her two daughters (one in college the other in high school). She was quite adamant that she does not want either of her daughters to wear her dress but wants to use it to give them a memento…so…I’ve been scouring Google and Pinterest for ideas. Here’s the front & back of the dress

There’s plenty of fabric to work with but I’ve NEVER worked with this fabric before…so if you have any pointers or suggestions, PLEASE help a girl out!! 😀

That’s about it for now…I’ll be watching football later today – here are my pics:

Mixed bag

Not a whole lot of quilting going on this week, instead I worked on a few smaller things. I finally made the December block for the Honeypot Bee – now I just need to do November and I can start designing the layout. I love Blueberry Park fabrics so I’m really looking forward to seeing this quilt completed.

hpbdec

A friend posted a link on my Facebook page last week suggesting I make some Soup bowl cozies. I’ve actually been wanting to make some of these for myself but hadn’t purchased the 100% cotton batting to do it (that way they’re microwave safe!). Well, that nudge on FB was all I needed! I ordered two packs of ‘Wrap N Zap’ from Walmart and they arrived on Thursday. I spent yesterday morning putting these lovelies together 🙂

bowlcozie1

I pulled coordinating fat quarters from my stash and cut 10″ squares which gave me two cozies from each set of FQ.

bowlcozie2

I’ve posted them on her FB page as $8 each or $15 for two. She’s coming by later today to make her choices. I made these six cozies from one package of Wrap N Zap; I still have the other package unopened so I can make six more if they’re really popular!

bowlcozie3

That’s all the sewing for this week. I have a tshirt quilt project that I need to start but I’ve been procrastinating – ugh – why do I do that!!!!? I’ve looked through all the shirts/clothes that my neighbor gave me…I just need to start cutting. This week, yes THIS WEEK I will get started 😉

~~~~~~~~~
I did not go for my C25K run yesterday [[[hangs head in shame]]] and it’ll be too cold (for me) to go out today. Our weather will be a mixed bag for the next 7 days but there will be plenty of opportunities to get out for a run.
7day
I need to remember my word for 2018…maybe I should print out this graphic and post it in my office, my sewing room and anywhere else that is necessary!
A little bit of everything
I think I’m in a bit of a sewing funk…and I think it’s because of the commission quilt I’ve taken on. The customer provided clothes from a recently departed Aunt to use in making a quilt for the Uncle, but I gotta tell ya these clothes are not so easy to work with. The colors are bright and bold and some have pretty loud patterns. Not to mention the fabrics are not cotton, it’s a mix of poly, rayon, spandex and velveteen – I have no idea how I’m going to make this into a quilt!!  😦  Ok enough whinning, I’ll just have to figure it out!
I’m planning a brick wall/subway tile design, here’s a peak at some of the 5×10″ pieces I’ve already cut
memorialquilt
And here are a few more I haven’t cut into yetmemorialquilt2
I think I’m going to need to get some sort of ‘blender’ fabric to tone it all down and give it some cohesion (for you Project Runway fans, I can hear Tim Gunn in my head “This is a make-it-work moment”!) Now you can see why I’m in a funk!!
On a brighter note, I finished the Clemson t-shirt quilt…woooohoooo!!! I took it outside for pictures right before dusk so please excuse the sun spots 😉
The 00 in the lower right corner is appliqued from extra t-shirt pieces and represents the year she graduated.
I’m not sure if I mentioned this before but I’ve been wanting to make a Redskins quilt for my hubby and a few months ago I bought some fabric online(!) that I thought matched the tshirt pieces I’ve already cut & stabilized…LOL, Nope! So last week I finally took the tshirt pieces to the fabric store and matched them up to the correct Burgundy and Gold shades…wow, that ‘gold’ is pretty bright but it matches the tshirt!!!
redskins
I’ve been playing with different design ideas and I think I’ve found one I like…we’ll see if I can get this done before football season is over!!
~~~

Last but not least, I went to our local botanical gardens Friday night – they’re hosting a Chinese Lanterns exhibit and it was beautiful!!! I didn’t start taking pictures until I saw the Elephants (my favorite) but there were all kinds of animals like hippos, dinosaurs, frogs, alligators, butterflies, bears and many, many more.

A little behind

I didn’t get around to posting last week because I was traveling so let me try to catch up now.

Last Friday I flew to Maryland to spend a few days with my niece and to attend her baby shower. As you may recall from my last post she had sent me a bundle of pink & gray fat quarters they wanted turned into a quilt (yes, she’s having a girl!). It only took me a few days to complete that project so I also made her a few receiving blankets and an elephant tag toy – you can read about that here.

Anytime I go back to Md I always hunt down some good crabs and I was not disappointed this time! We went to a restaurant called Fifer’s in Fort Smallwood.

The Baby Shower was on Sunday…they had it at their house and handled all the details. I helped them pickup the cake and balloons that morning and we finalized all the food & decorations. I’ll spare you the hundreds of pictures and just show a few – they’ve already picked out her name too: Campbell Elizabeth

How cute is this cake!!! ❤

bs3

What a creative way to ‘wrap’ the gift!

I flew home Monday afternoon and haven’t spent much time in my sewing room but I did get a little bit done. I finally got around to completing the August Honey Pot Bee block and since I was on a roll I did September too!

AugustHPB aug

September

HPB sept

Since I got the September one done so early, there’s a second block option for Sept that I may make as well  😉

I also put this top together…I had to set it aside in my “Tops” box (waiting to be basted, quilted & finished) so I can work on a few commissioned projects.

plus top

I picked up a new commissioned job to do quilting & binding on a cross stitch blanket (pictures next week) and I finally got my client to pick out backing fabric for the Clemson tshirt quilt. I had to order it online so it should be here early next week.

I’ve been watching the US Open for the last week…lots of great stories but my highlights are Roger & Rafa (how do they continue to play at that level?!!)  and all the US Ladies that are doing so well!

And I’m looking forward to another season of NFL…my team, the Redskins, isn’t predicted to do very well so as usual I’ll cheer on my back up team, the Patriots!

That’s about it for now…let me know what you’ve been working on!

Sewing for Baby

I finished the baby quilt for my niece in plenty of time for my trip this coming weekend…Yay! The color in the pictures is not quite right…the fabrics are a little more saturated but this is the best I could get :-/

I also made another receiving blanket with the left over flannel

And the new momma asked if I could try to make a tagtoy they saw on Pinterest, my first attempt is a little wonky but unless I can make another in the next two days this one will have to do.

tagtoymine

I’ve had my fill of pink fabric for now but I’m sure I’ll be using more as that little girl outgrows these!

I put the final seam in the Clemson tshirt quilt…I’m now waiting on the client to pick out backing fabric. I emailed her a few options but she didn’t love them so I asked her to go online and find something, let’s see how long this takes!

clemsondone

We made a little purchase this past week – we’ve had a Dodge Van for over 20 years and it served us well but it was time to let it go. We’re downsizing everything for our move to Myrtle Beach so I guess it made sense to downsize the vehicle too! We’ve been checking out KIA Soul’s for quite a while and finally pulled the trigger…I love it. It has quite a bit of passenger space and just enough room in the back to haul small stuff when the rear seats are folded down. We’ve nick-named it our “Rat Rod” after those cute commercials with the mice!!

That’s about it for now…what have you been up to this week?
