A day late…

I totally forgot to post yesterday 😮  Not much going on, but here are the highlights:

Last week I celebrated 40 years of working for the same company! WOW, do I feel old!! The company has been bought & sold a few times and I’ve survived each one. I’m hoping to ‘retire’ in a few years and work part-time at my LQS – that would be a dream come true!!

I put the final stitches in the commissioned memory quilt top – now I’m waiting on the client to decide on backing fabric.

So…while I’m waiting on her, I decided to start a scrappy postage stamp quilt. I’m pulling my scraps out by color bin and making as many 5×5 blocks as I can. Here are the 7 blocks I made from my Red bin. I’m following Sarah’s tutorial using 2.5 strips, it sure does make it easier!!

Next up is my Pink bin…for some reason I have a ton of pink scraps so I’m sure I’ll get way more than seven blocks.

Lastly, I re-joined Weight Watchers, WW as they like to be called now. I’ve got about 23 pounds that needs to come off and the only success I’ve had in the past was with WW…I just need to get my head refocused and stop all the junk food snacking I’ve been doing!

Busy week

I just realized I didn’t post my W1D3 workout last week… I think I may be getting my legs and lungs back, ha – but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, it’s only Week 1!!

Last week I also made some Christmas cookies…Hubby likes the Tollhouse Chocolate Chip cookie recipe however he doesn’t like the chocolate chips!! So I make the cookies for him and substitute extra nuts in place of the chips, I guess they should be called Walnut cookies! I also made a batch of Oatmeal cookies for me…my favorite. Here’s the ‘in process’ mess…

If you’re a Weight Watchers member you know they updated their Smart Points plan last week…it’s now called Freestyle. Everything still has Smart Points but there are many, many more 0 point foods now – like Chicken Breast, Fish, Beans and Eggs. Clearly the plan guides you to choose lean protein over other foods.

I saw an Instant Pot recipe for Chicken Taco soup and decided to give it a try. OH!EM!GEE! It was fantastic!! Very satisfying & filling and two servings (1 cup each) were only 2 smart points!! The points come from the Taco Seasoning mix and the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing seasoning mix. This couldn’t have been any easier – just dump it all in at one time, set at High pressure for 30 mins and it’s done!!!

I finally finished the Redskins top…woohoo! It measures 75×84 so it will be nice and big to cover DH while he’s watching the games. And with the way the Redskins have been playing he’ll need the extra comfort! Ha! Of course that means I’ve got to get it basted, quilted and bound before he can actually use it! I used a couple of cheap tshirts I found online, some yardage of Burgundy & Gold and a few pieces of the backing fabric I had left over. It’s not a brilliant design but it’ll serve the purpose 😀  I plan to do the quilting in a yellow/gold thread which should add some interest to all the burgundy yardage… hmmm, must start thinking about what I’m gonna do in all that open space!

That’s about all for now…I plan to do Week 2 Day 1 a little later today when the temps get above 40 degrees! so I may be putting up another post later 😉

A bit of a slow week

I didn’t get any work done on the memorial quilt or the #quiltsforvegas quilt {{{hangs head in shame}}}

I did however complete two commissioned table toppers…one for fall, one for Christmas…but I can’t show pictures yet because I just mailed them out yesterday and the recipient follows this blog :-p  I’ll definitely post pics next week!!

Outside of that, the only new information to share is I’ve rejoined Weight Watchers! I’ve packed on 25 pounds over the last year and I clearly need more accountability to help me eat better and exercise. WW has helped me in the past so I know it will help me again. Once I meet my goal I need to KEEP GOING to the meetings so I don’t slip backwards again, like I did this time. I know better so I need to do better!!

I’ve been listening to the audio book “The 5 Second Rule” by Mel Robbins and I love it!5sec

She makes so many good points – I’ve had many ‘ah-ha’ moments. This is my second time through and I’m hearing things I missed the first time…I’m going to listen to it over & over until I’m sure I’ve heard it all. I highly recommend the audio book because Mel reads it herself and she delivers it with wit & sarcasm that might be lost otherwise.

I woke up extra early this morning (5am!) to watch the Shanghai Final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal…it did not disappoint. Roger was on fire and Rafa just couldn’t get any traction. I’m going to need a nap today for sure!!

That’s all for now…have a great day!!

Week 6, Day 1 – new gadget

This is my birthday week so I asked for (translated: bought myself) a new tech gadget to help with my overall fitness.

I joined Weight Watchers at the beginning of November and I’ve lost a few pounds but it’s been v-e-r-y slow, so I figured I needed to move more. I checked out the plethora (ha! never get to use that word!) of fitness bands and based on a few key features I decided on the Garmin Vivofit 2.

  1. I like that it’s not a rechargeable battery – it takes a watch battery that runs until it dies and then you replace it. Yay, one less thing to remember to plug in at night.
  2. Weight Watchers connects to Garmin Connect and automatically updates my activity. Yay, one less thing I have to do manually.

This little band has really opened my eyes to just how much I’ve been sitting – wow! It makes a chime and shows a red bar when you haven’t moved in 1 hour and keeps chiming every 15 mins until you do. I wore it for the first whole day on Monday and it chimed at me 3 times before lunch! Each time I would get out of my chair, march in place for about 3 minutes, which made it happy and then it reset.

This band will also monitor how restful your sleep is based on movement which means I had to wear it to bed (by the way, this thing is meant to be worn 24/7 – shower and all!). I had a hard time the first night because I’m not used to wearing anything when I sleep – nope, nothing! Here’s what last nights’ sleep graph looks like:

sleep 12.14.15

You put the band in SLEEP mode when you get in bed; the pink bars show awake time, the blue are light sleep and the dark is restful sleep. I think I have some issues – LOL! I’ll wait until I get a little more data built up before drawing any conclusions 😉

Today was my first run with this band – it was easy enough to start and stop the work out and was pretty accurate when compared to the C25K app on my phone. The only downside is it doesn’t record Splits, just average pace and total time – not sure how I feel about that yet 😦

run 12.15.15

c25k 12.15.15

That’s about all for now…gonna go watch Jordan Smith win The Voice!

Mojo oh mojo…where did you go?

I’m not sure if it’s the time change or the weather change or something else altogether but I just can’t seem to find my running mojo. I haven’t run since Oct 31 when I put in a hard fought 3 miles – it wasn’t so hard from a physical perspective as it was the mental perspective. The whole time I was running I was cursing myself for not being more consistent and fighting back the gremlins that kept telling me it was ok to stop at 1 or 2 miles. Ugh…why does my brain do this?

Every day since then I’ve been trying to pep-talk myself into a run but it just hasn’t worked…the gremlins have won. About two weeks ago I re-joined Weight Watchers, after a 3 year hiatus, and I’ve been making better food choices but I haven’t fully committed to that either. I’ve been trying to focus on “why” I want to lose weight and be more active but that hasn’t resulted in finding my mojo. Any suggestions would be appreciated 🙂

On a brighter note, I’ve been getting caught up on some of my sewing/quilting projects. I finished and mailed the Christmas Tree table runner and I’ve gotten caught up on the HST Sampler QAL from Amanda at 3and3quaters. There are nine blocks planned in the series…here are my first 6:

I chose to use a Michael Miller layer cake called “Happy Dots” and I really love how fun and pretty the fabrics are…the only issue is I don’t have enough of each color/print to make some of the blocks because there were only a few duplicates in the stack. I’m going to have to check my stash for some other dot fabric, if I don’t have any I guess I’ll just have to buy more!!

That’s about all for now…as I said above, if you have any suggestions to spark my running mojo I’d LOVE to hear it.

It’s been too long

Oh my, I’ve been traveling so much lately…I added it up – over the last 43 days I’ve been gone 24 of them! Ugh, not my idea of fun 😦  Albeit, 10 of those days were for vacation but having them sandwiched in between business travel was just not a good idea.

I’m back home now and I have no plans to travel through the end of the year – aahhhh. I have lots of things I need to do right here at home:

  • Sewing/quilting
    • Finish Christmas tree table runner
    • Finish Pink Camo/Bunny crib quilt
    • Catch up with Amanda’s QAL (she’s already on block 6!!)
    • Finish Dog Gone Cute blocks/quilt
    • Start king size quilt-as-you-go for my niece
    • Finish black/white quilt
    • …and much more I can’t recall just now
  • Running
    • Get back into a regular schedule
    • Train for Half Marathon in March
  • Weight Watchers
    • Yep, I re-joined!
    • Grocery shopping – so I have better choices in the house
    • Need to drop 28 lbs

I’m sure there are many other things that should be on this list but that’s all that comes to mind at the moment. And, I’ve already checked one thing off this list!!! I finished the Christmas tree table runner last night!! It just needed to be quilted and have the binding put on but for some reason I had been procrastinating really badly :-s

I did FMQ using swirl circles on the trees, and random loops in the background. I tried to do a ‘ribbon candy’ effect on the red striped section…not sure how successful I was – lol  This table runner will be mailed off to my friend in California, just in time for her to start decorating later this month…whew!

It’s been raining A LOT here in South Carolina for the past several weeks and it’s no different today, so I’ll be spending most of the day in the sewing room…let’s see what else I can check off my list!!

Weight Watchers

I’m currently in Lifetime mode for WW but I’ve kind of fallen off the wagon over the holidays.  My weigh-in is tonight and I know I’m going to be at least 3lbs over my goal.  That’s not so bad, I know I can lose it I just need to start being active again.  I signed up for a 5K run in March so that will motivate me to get going again.  It’s been so darn cold here over the last month that I just don’t feel like exercising…although I know that’s when I need it the most.

I’ll update this post after my weigh-in so I can be accountable for the weight I’ve gained and work towards getting back on track…ttfn

**Update: as I suspected I was over my goal weight by 2.6lbs.  I’ve got four weeks until my next weigh in to lose it or I’ll have to pay another fee to weigh-in.**
